Rebecca Strain ‘The Fine Art of Rejection’
|
|
Artist Talk: Rebecca Strain

Date: Thursday 27 November Time: 6pm-7pm Venue: ESA, Patrick Studios FREE ADMISSION - BOOKING REQUIRED. Please e-mail info@esaweb.org.uk to book or call 0113 2480040.
Rebecca will give a talk about her work and recent projects.
More on Rebecca Strain: Rebecca Strain first began to use paper in her work under the tutelage of Karen Cain who had been comissioned to work with the community in Omagh, Northern Ireland in the aftermath of the bomb which killed 29 people in 1999. She was immediately struck by the use of the papermaking process as a way of dealing with complex emotions. She then went on to complete a BA in Textile Crafts at Huddersfield University where she began her exploration of constructed textiles, combining this with her skills in papermaking.
After her degree she has continued to develop her work which deals with social issues such as consumerism and value using accumulated and found objects from her immediate environment. She has exhibited regionally and in 2006 had her first solo show 'Receipt' which explored consumerism by documenting personal feelings on receipts at the moment when goods or services transfered ownership.

Exhibition: ,,Sammelbände"

ESA present ,,Sammelbände" an exhibition of three successive solo shows by Harry Meadley, Iona Smith and Alex Farrar. Over the course of two weeks, each of the three artists, who operate as a consortium, will show new work from their autonomous endeavours with the exhibitions at ESA coinciding with offsite artwork located at Hyde Park Corner, Leeds.
Dates:
Harry Meadley Preview: 6-8pm, Mon 6 Oct 2008. Continues: Tues 7 - Thur 9 Oct 2008
Iona Smith Preview: 6-8pm, Fri 10 Oct 2008. Continues: Sat 11 - Mon 13 Oct 2008
Alex Farrar Preview: 6-8pm, Tues 14 Oct 2008. Continues: Wed 15 - Fri 17 Oct 2008
Venue (main exhibitions): ESA, Patrick Studios, St. Mary's Lane, Leeds, LS9 7EH. Venue (offsite billboard artwork): Hyde Park Corner, Leeds. Link to Map.
More on the artists:
Harry Meadley: Until this point, Meadley has been focused on the production of early works, where the dimension of when has been made paramount in advance. Such as the Harry Meadley Prize – an ongoing institutionalised art prize on a course he completed only a couple of years ago. He now presents new works, the setting of his own paradigm.
Iona Smith: Typical of a practice concerned with social structures that contrive collective experience comes new work with more than a year's preparation, to enjoy three days of public display before being interred in the ground.
Alex Farrar: As a practice that represents a continuous dialogue and engagement with art's success and failure, this exhibition is the first complete survey of Alex Farrar's activities encompassing his vision of artistic investment, creation of new art spaces and construction of a loyal group of patrons.
********
Following the exhibition a new volume of A Latento will be released: a serial publication by the consortium further elaborating on their practices.

Amelia Crouch 'Looking - Capture - Reproduction'
|
|
Ameila Crouch showing in Relocating Absence at Elevator Gallery, London

Relocating Absence is a group exhibition showcasing the work of thirteen internationally emerging artists. Through a variety of media, including sculpture, installation, video, photography and drawing, the exhibition offers a series of artistic interpretations of the theme, often playing with the constants of space and time. Absence, in fact, is essentially temporal – it is located where something was: it lies between the realms of Being (object) and Knowledge (perception, creation of a mental image).
Amelia Crouch's Looking- Capture- Reproduction, a fragmentary narrative in scenes, consists of a series of eight short texts printed on paper and pasted to the wall. Each text is highly evocative of an absent visual image, that the viewer is invited to relocate in his own mind, drawing on his personal visual archive.

Andrew Lister wins Best in Show

Andrew Lister was awarded Best in Show for his portrait of Simon Weston entitled ‘Simon’ at the launch of the Leeds Art Fair 2007. The fair took place from the 3rd to the 9th of May 2007 in The Light in Leeds city centre and is in its 23rd year. As one of 49 artists selected from open submission, Lister's work was part of a ‘satellite show’, independently curated by Sheila Gaffney from Leeds College of Art and Design. Leeds Art Fair showcases the work of emerging new artists alongside that of professional and nationally known artists and increases the involvement of the art educational institutions of Leeds, while looking at new ways of presenting contemporary art in a non-gallery and public space.
