Louise Atkinson 'Atlas'

Louise Atkinson
spacer only

Louise Atkinson works in sculpture and installation using a variety of media including paper, textile media and techniques and new technology. The influence for her work derives from ideas about identity and the human condition, including psychoanalytic and transhumanist theory. She is especially interested in the ‘feminine’ qualities of traditional and craft-based materials and techniques within the context of installation. She regularly collaborates with other artists to developing new technology installations, creating multi-sensory experiences with a tactile or audio elements as a way of making art more accessible to people with visual impairments.

Larna Campbell 'Paper'

I am a process led visual artist. I have a great interest in the tactile and physical qualities of paper, the fact that a flat sheet of paper can easily be transformed into a sculptural form, and also the fact that everyone has seen and touched paper before and can therefore engage more easily with the work. I do, however, use other materials in my work too and am currently exploring natural materials such as willow. My practice explores themes of time and place, transformation and narrative and manifests itself in sculpture, drawing, intervention and performance work.

Amelia Crouch 'Dream Home' 2005

Amelia Crouch

My work is broadly concerned with how the way we interpret objects or situations can shape our beliefs and affect our relationships with other people. Often focusing on everyday, familiar situations, I use different forms of image and language to explore how changes of context and the media themselves impact on the viewer’s construction of meaning.

My current work explores how written language can convey a sense of visuality and considers differences in how image and narrative address a viewer. I aim to disrupt the dichotomy between looking and language and understand the importance of a kind of multimodal ‘imaging’ for processes of understanding.

I work with media including video, audio, text, digital photography and painting.

Work by Valerie Halliwell

Valerie Halliwell

My work is a jumble of thoughts and memories. My paintings are often autobiographical and usually cathartic.

I always think that each person’s own experience of life has a unique quality. I try to capture this in my work - “A sort of diary”. Recordings ... Of feelings, energies, dreams, sensations, torments and pain. Layer upon layer, digging beneath the surface. An inner world. Exploring. A mind trip of today ... Of every day. Past and present. Sometimes I wonder I question “Paint the post modern world” as we see it as we know it. Externally. Methodically record the information that is in front of me. Use the latest technology. Be part of the modern trends. Then..I stop I think I realize I already Do!

Stress, Angst, Pollution of this modern world are already there in my work.

Just in another language. Since time began. But new today - This very moment.

Artist's statement:

My current work is concerned with the history and legacy of African slavery, particularly in its importance for members of the African diaspora living in Britain today. Taking inspiration from the portrayal of Africans in British visual culture over the last 300 years, the work is a journey through the legacy of slavery, colonisation and migration and the implications for identity and sense of belonging for black people in Britain.

Gillian’s work is concerned with the multiple realities and perceptions of contemporary society, encountered through contradiction and absurdity. She is currently exploring digital painting and drawing layering and animation processes, which attempt to reveal these multiple forms of reality within imagery, both in a temporal and contextual way

Emma Melton, 'Fig.8', Hysteric Beauty Series, Oil, acrylic, make up, glass paint and sweets on canvas

Emma Melton

Emma is a recent graduate from Leeds University. She is interested in how women have been portrayed and perceived throughout history and how they in turn perceive themselves. Her large scale oil paintings explore the idea of Beauty, Hysteria and Power from a female point of view. Past work has focused on the depiction of women in the media, ideas of beauty as a form of punishment and beauty as religion.

Kathryn Oubridge, 'Out of Place'

Kathryn Oubridge
spacer only
Kathryn Oubridge's current practice explores context and meaning through improvisational installations, temporary interventions and nomadic practices. The creation of, or play on, an interaction between the work and the space in which it is sited is important. Incongruity (between objects and context, as well as in the use and quality of materials) is often used as a device to challenge our perception, sometimes with humorous results, sometimes with a more unsettling effect.

Her practice embraces many processes and media: fabrication, photography and the use of found objects, with experimental research in film, projection and light installation work. Her persisting interest lies in the relation between a sense of place and our sense of self. Regarding art practice as a 'Doing Think', Kathryn's objective is to provide material for reflection. She produces work for both gallery and non-gallery spaces.
