Spring 2010 Programme
2009
Thunder in the Potty - two months of events exploring capitalism and collective thinking in contemporary society.
UNITED - Using contemporary arts practitioners as a starting point, ESA explored how collective and collaborative events could take shape to express and share ideas. With references to workers unions and other representative bodies, UNITED examined how the professional field of art operates without formal structures, resulting in a supportive and independent series of events that reflected the artist-driven sector and the many facets of social networks.
2008
Multitude - a series of events in November 2008 that explored ideas of consumerism, collecting and hoarding through a variety of socially engaged art events, exhibitions, artist commissions and residencies.
3x3 - A series of talks and workshops by artists and curators for visual arts practitioners.
Journey - A three day event that opened up ESAs Patrick and Beaver Studios giving audiences the opportunity to navigate the buildings to engage in artists work and participate in the launch of new activities and the culmination of past projects.
RouteMap - an 8 month professional development programme.
2007
The Interior Dream (for Light Night) - 2007 was the first year of ESA's involvement in Light Night, a city wide on-night festival in Leeds. ESA commissioned artist Paula Fleming to show another way that the 'other' or 'fantastic' is something to wonder at and explore, not to put walls around and dismiss as objectionable.
Showing: Expectations - This project seeks to critically question peoples' expectations of art practices and applies differing (to traditionally sanctioned) approaches towards the production and curation of artworks.
Interlude 2 - Katy Devine and Matthew Walters (covert noise research) worked within in the city for three weeks as a site responsive project that is part of an ongoing dialogue between the cities of Leeds and Berlin initiated by East Street Arts (ESA).
The Post Echo - ESA commissioned Rebecca French and Andrew Mottershead of FrenchMottershead to create a new work for SituationLeeds07. The Post Echo is a free tabloid newspaper created, published and circulated by the artists during the two-week festival.
Delineate - An exhibition over two sites, Delineate showcased a diverse range of contemporary visual art exploring the possibilities of line. Ranging from more traditional to experimental approaches, artists pushed the boundaries of mark-making to include found objects, sculpture and digitally formatted drawings.
2006
MAP - A team of ESA staff and studio holders embarked on a research visit to Berlin in 2006 and executed the MAP project. ESA is a frequent visitor to Berlin and the Art Forum and was delighted to present the work of 8 artists in 2006. MAP explores navigational strategies employed by artists and audiences within the context of the Art Forum.
