Based in Leeds and Bradford, Cherry Kino makes and shows wondermental film, curating screenings of experimental film and runs film workshop.

Specifically working with Super 8 and 16mm film formats, and other diverse film techniques (such as various types of processing, toning, tinting, solarising, rayogram methods etc.), Cherry Kino’s ambition is to run DIY artist-run film labs in Leeds to help keep up the flow of knowledge in this area.

MicroCinema and MicroLab
Cherry Kino will present an event every month until July next year. This will be a mixture of MicroCinema events (screenings) and MicroLab events (workshops) in Leeds and Bradford, so you can watch unique, engaging, beautiful 'wondermental' films and also learn some fun and inspiring lab techniques for working hands-on with 16mm and Super 8 film! The events will take place in various locations, with some taking place at ESA Patrick Studios.

Next event:

“A Day at the Beach”!
Date
: Friday 20 August 2010
Times: 6.30pm – 10.30pm
Venue: ESA Patrick Studios, St Mary’s Lane, Leeds. LS9 7EH.
Admission: £5 on the door (£4 with a CK card)

A screening of wondermental “beach” films!

Inspired by a brief but intense boiling hot few weeks this summer spent longing for the sea, “A Day at the Beach” takes the beach as its inspiration. Artists have always been fascinated by that liminal, shifting border between sea and land, and have used it as a means of expressing a multitude of ideas and feelings. Found home movies on Super 8 are often of beach holidays, glittering waves, castles made of sand… it’s a place that fascinates, where normal modes of behaviour don’t apply (a holiday from normal life), and it draws us in with a hypnotist’s skill, inviting us to let go of land and try floating for a while, or emerge primordially from the rich sea, newly born.

After the screening will be a specially curated selection of music all chosen according to the theme, to turn the screening into a bit of a party with a bar, and some BBQ’d veggie sausages for your enjoyment!

OpenLab
Super 8 and 16mm film-making resources
Dates: 2nd Friday of the month between 12 – 6pm, first workshop Friday 13 August 2010
Admission: You will need a Cherry Kino card priced £30 to gain access to the OpenLab days - see below for more.

Cherry Kino will run OpenLab where Super 8 and 16mm filmmaking resources will be open to the public for one day a month, based in the Project Space at ESA Patrick Studios. Resources include a dark room, hand-processing equipment, projectors, splicers, cameras, tripods, DIY telecine facilities, Steenbeck, library of film books, projection space, screen and a kitchen! There will also be fresh film and chemistry for sale, stored in a fridge with a history - it used to belong to the Reliance pub, and before that it was the beer fridge for the Underground Bar in the famed Town and Country Club!

Once you have the card, you can use the resources on OpenLab days for FREE. The card is valid until 1st July 2011 and it also gives you £1 off every CK screening, £3 off every CK workshop, and also FREE East Street Arts Socialite membership for a year (usual price £10).
